Abstract

The present study aimed to compare the marital adjustment between love and arranged marriage couples across the dimensions of emotional, sexual, and social adjustment. The sample consisted of 100 married individuals (50 couples), The sample consisted of 50 couples, including 25 love-marriage couples and 25 arranged-marriage couples, selected from the Jalna district of Maharashtra using a purposive sampling method. The Marital Adjustment Questionnaire (MAQ) by Dr. Pramod Kumar and Dr. Kanchan Rohatgi (1999) was administered to assess marital adjustment. Results revealed that love marriage couples exhibited significantly higher emotional, social, and overall marital adjustment compared to arranged marriage couples, whereas arranged marriage couples showed better sexual adjustment. These findings suggest that emotional familiarity, mutual understanding, and pre-marital compatibility contribute to higher adjustment in love marriages, while traditional values and commitment enhance sexual harmony in arranged marriages. The study highlights the evolving dynamics of marital relationships in modern Indian society.
