The Feminization of Poverty: Causes and Implications of early child marriage in Iran
Main Article Content
Abstract
In many countries child marriage is linked with poverty. This is because it affects particularly the poorest in the population, and helps to reinforce cycles of poverty. The underlying causes for women's poverty vary across countries but generally fall into one of the main categories which is early child marriage. This research[1] has studied the most unflinching causes of child marriage in Iran. The results showed that poverty is one of the most important contributing factors to child marriage and is linked to its prevalence in Iran. Poverty has become a noticeable variable and a significant cause and consequence of early child marriage. ECM and divorce under the age of 18 as a symptom and a driver of poverty leaves girls vulnerable to the health risks and social and economic costs of early and forced marriage. Some recommendations to reduce child marriage, which has long-run negative effects on the development of children, have also been presented in this article. For instance, policymakers need to focus on economic issues and distribution of wages, thus decreasing the economic incentives or requirements of families to accept the practice of child marriage.
